Social Media

The San Bernardino City Unified School District encourages our students, parents, and the community to follow us on our numerous social media platforms to get updates, news, and stories related to our students, schools, and events happening in our community.

San Bernardino City Unified School District allows employees to use approved technology tools, including social media, to enhance instruction and student achievement and to facilitate communication among employees, parents, students, and the community. For purposes of this document, social media includes various online technology tools that enable people to communicate over the Internet to share information and resources. These include, but are not limited to, websites, web logs (blogs), wikis, social networks, photo and video sharing sites, social bookmarking, podcasting and vodcasting, chats, instant messaging, online forums, virtual worlds, and massively multiplayer online games. Examples of social media include, but are not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Delicious, and Second Life. This document contains the guidelines for employees’ responsible use of such social media in the San Bernardino City Unified School District.

All social media use must be in accordance with state and federal laws, and District policies, regulations, and guidelines. All employees who participate in social media for professional purposes are expected to understand and follow the guidelines for professional social media use. Failure to do so could result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal. Employees who also use social media for personal purposes are strongly encouraged to follow the guidelines for personal social media use.


PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA USE
Obligations and Responsibilities

  • Any employee postings, displays, or communications must comply with the District’s Employee Use of Technology policy, all state and federal laws, and any other applicable District policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Employees shall not use obscene, profane, or vulgar language on any social media network or engage in communications or conduct that is in violation of the District’s Non-Discriminatory/Harassment Policy. Disruptions to the school community and/or work environment caused by employee activity on social media is subject to review and action.
  • Employees may not disclose information or images that are confidential or proprietary to the District, its students, or employees or that is protected by data privacy laws.
  • The use of District and school logos or images on any social media sites must be approved by the Superintendent or designee.
  • Employees may not post any nonpublic images of the District premises and property, including, but not limited to, floor plans, that have the potential to compromise the District’s safety and
    security.
  • Employees may not post images of students without written parental consent, except for images of students taken in the public arena, such as at sporting events or public fine arts performances.
  • Content must be kept current and accurate.
  • Content must conform to all applicable state and federal laws, as well as District and Board Policies, regulations, and guidelines. Content must not violate copyright or intellectual property
    laws.
  • Any approved official presence on online social media sites, outside those created and monitored by the District’s Communications Department, shall include the following text:
    “The views expressed on this site do not necessarily reflect the views of the San Bernardino City Unified School District. This site contains user-created content which is not endorsed by the District. The purpose of this site is...” (then specify the purpose).


PERSONAL SOCIAL MEDIA USE

When using online social media and/or networking tools for personal purposes, all employees are advised of the following:
  • Employees are strongly discouraged from engaging in personal social-networking friendships on Facebook or other social networking sites with students and parents/guardians of students. Employees are encouraged to use official or work-related pages for such interactions instead. Employees are further discouraged from using social networking sites, e-mail, text messaging, or instant messaging to discuss with a student a matter that does not pertain to school-related activities.
  • Employees who identify themselves online as working for the San Bernardino City Unified School District should ensure that profiles and related content are consistent with how they wish to present themselves to colleagues, parents, students, and community members. It is recommended that those employees post a disclaimer on their social media pages stating “The views on this page are personal and do not reflect the views of the San Bernardino City Unified School District.”
  • Employees may not use District and school logos or images on any personal social networking sites without prior permission from the Superintendent or designee.
  • Employees are responsible for the content they post, share, or respond to online, and should carefully review the privacy settings on any social media and networking sites they use to control access to personal networks, web pages, profiles, posts, digital media, forums, fan pages, etc. Employees should be aware, however, that privacy settings bring a false sense of security, and anything posted on the Internet may be subject to viewing and re-posting by third parties without an individual’s knowledge or consent.
  • Because online content can be spread in mere seconds to a mass audience, employees are strongly encouraged to carefully consider what they post.
