November 20 - Letter to Families

Dear SBCUSD family,

I hope this finds you staying safe and looking forward to the many blessings of the holiday season. The purpose of this letter is to keep you up to date on the District’s plans as we respond to the ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know it has been a year of many changes and challenges, one unlike any other we have experienced.

At the November 17 meeting, our Board of Education made the decision to have all students remain in distance learning for the remainder of the 2020–21 school year. We recognize that this is a welcome announcement for some, while for others it poses continued challenges. In what has been a consistent theme throughout the District’s response to our unique circumstances, the Board based this decision on local data related to safety—for our students and their families and for our team members and their families. The second surge of the Coronavirus has impacted our county, our city, and our school district significantly. The number of confirmed cases is rising steadily, with an anticipated, continued increase due to the holiday and flu seasons.

As we approach a longer-than-originally-expected use of distance learning as our primary instructional delivery model, I would like to thank all the many members of our team who have worked so diligently to make the initial transition possible and who continue to work tirelessly toward implementation. This will be our ongoing charge—continuing to refine our virtual learning environments toward improved outcomes for students.

As we move toward this goal, we thank you for your patience and your partnership. I am confident that, by working together, we will get through this successfully, and I look forward to a positive remainder of the school year. Please be sure to visit our website regularly to receive continued updates, and please stay safe during the upcoming holiday season. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Harold J. Vollkommer, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent

Gracias.

Atentamente,
Dr. Harold J. Vollkommer
Superintendente interino

November 18 - Message to Parent from Interim Superintendent

Hi, this is Harold Vollkommer, interim superintendent of San Bernardino City Unified Schools calling with important information about action our Board of Education took last night. As you may know, our Board of Education decided to keep all students in distance learning for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. We know this comes as welcome news to some and will pose challenges for others who were planning to participate in blended learning. The Board carefully considered local COVID-19 trends that show the virus is spreading at alarming rates and those living in our district attendance boundaries are especially at risk. Their decision aligned with their steadfast commitment to safety for all of our families. This decision also brings a measure of certainty for families and will allow us to focus increased attention on strengthening the distance learning experience for students. Please visit www.sbcusd.com to learn more. Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children. Please continue to remain safe through this holiday season.

October 18 - Phone Message to Parents

Hi, this is San Bernardino City Unified calling with an important message about educational choice. While no date has been set for reopening schools, SBCUSD is preparing to reopen when it is deemed safe to bring students back. To be ready, we need all families to tell us how your child will learn for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Will your child learn entirely from home, an option known as the Extended Distance Learning Model? Or will your child do better in the Blended Learning Model, where they attend some school in person combined with some online learning?

Please make that selection as soon as possible and notify your child’s school by November 6. Look for a letter and flyer that will be arriving this week providing more information about how to record your educational choice, which is as easy as logging into the Aeries Parent Portal or calling your child’s school before the November 6 deadline. The sooner you provide your selection the better prepared we will be for the eventual return of students. You must make a selection for each child enrolled in SBCUSD schools. If you have any questions about your options, please call your child’s school. Thank you.

Gracias.

October 9 - Letter to Families

Dear San Bernardino City Unified School District Families:

At its October 6 meeting, our Board of Education reaffirmed its strong commitment to providing a safe learning environment for all students and staff. We understand school closures continue to have significant impacts on our students and families. We assure you that all of us in the San Bernardino City Unified School District are working diligently to prepare for the reopening of our schools.

Our goal is to open schools and return to in-person instruction for students and staff as soon it is safe to do so. Unfortunately, due to the high rates of COVID-19 cases in San Bernardino County, and more specifically the City of San Bernardino, schools in our region are prohibited from holding in-class instruction until conditions improve and stringent criteria are met. As we carefully monitor coronavirus cases, we continue our large-scale preparations to ensure our schools are clean and safe and ready to welcome students back for in-person instruction. In the coming weeks, we will be unveiling a multimedia information campaign showcasing all of these improvements and new, state-of-the-art equipment that will play a key role in helping us combat the spread of illness in our schools and offices.

As we wait for COVID-19 numbers to drop, we are carefully preparing for future phases of our return-to-school plan. And we need your help. When we eventually return to in-person instruction, all students and families will have the choice to either attend school through a Blended Learning Model, where they attend some school in-person combined with some online learning, or an Extended Distance Learning Model, where students continue receiving all instruction online. Within the next two to three weeks, our schools will be asking families to make this choice official so we can finalize preparations to bring Blended Learning students back to campus. Again, our Board of Education has made it clear that all preparations must be in place before the governing body can deem it safe to open to students. While we cannot provide specific dates at this time, you can help us prepare by considering the options when they are presented and responding definitively about how your child(ren) will learn when schools reopen.

We will continue to keep you informed as our Board of Education considers all guidelines set forth by federal, state, and local agencies, including the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). We look forward to the day when we can welcome students back to our school sites. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and continue to stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,
Harold J. Vollkommer
Interim Superintendent

Atentamente,
Dr. Harold J. Vollkommer
Superintendente interino

August 28 - Letter to Families

Dear San Bernardino City Unified Families,

As we move into the second month of our school year, I want to acknowledge the incredible job you are doing as parents/caretakers of our students. For many of you, the coronavirus pandemic thrust you into the new role of teacher, cafeteria worker, and playground supervisor, all in one. You have patiently confronted technology challenges and creatively solved logistical issues like balancing work and caring for the changing needs of your family. You’ve done all of this with the grace and patience of a consummate educator. We cannot thank you enough for your perseverance and commitment to your child’s education.

We recognize that this has not been easy. As we’ve worked with you to make online classes successful, we’ve learned many lessons together. Today, I want to share some of these with you, and let you know how we are responding to your needs.

When the new school year started on August 3, thousands of our students logged on using District-issued devices and hotspots, a testament to all that our Board of Education has done to prioritize bridging the digital divide. We acknowledge that technology gaps remain, and we are working to address them. Of particular note, you alerted us to these challenges with data limits on our hotspots, and in the coming weeks we expect to be able to remove data limits so that students can more fully access technology. We have also heard that connecting with tech support and other departments has been challenging. Due to the pandemic, most of our employees are working from home, which has made voicemail our primary means of assisting you. We want to serve you better and are exploring solutions to help you get quicker access to the answers you need.

Despite our best efforts to serve you, things outside of our control, like power outages brought on by high temperatures and learning platform glitches, may still interrupt student learning. We appreciate your patience and understanding and encourage you to remind your children to keep devices and hotspots charged at all times.

I have always pointed to the resilience of our students and the strength and resolve of our families as strengths within our community. I am inspired by the stories of parents helping parents during this crisis, like the mother who tagged us on social media with pictures of the creative ways she customized a quiet learning space for each of her children. In that vein, I also want to share a few tips for distance learning, many of which we learned by listening to parents like you through our Town Hall meetings. You’ll find the key learnings on the enclosed flyer. We hope it will be useful as you continue supporting your children in their education this year.

We remain committed to doing our best to help our terrific students learn at high levels. Thank you for your continued partnership toward this goal. Please stay safe and here’s to an outstanding 2020-21 school year!

With Respect and Admiration,

Harold J. Vollkommer, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent

P.S. If you have a kindergarten-age child or know a child who lives in our attendance boundaries and should be in kinder, please let them know our schools are eager to enroll the Class of 2033. Visit www.sbcusd.com for enrollment information.

Harold J. Vollkommer, Ed.D.
Superintendente interino

August 10 - Google Meet Outage

Good afternoon, this is San Bernardino City Unified calling with an important message about distance learning. Earlier today, Monday, August 10, SBCUSD experienced a districtwide outage with Google Meets that impacted distance learning for students logging into class using this platform. We immediately worked with Google to correct the problem and are confident the issue has been resolved. August 2, 2020 - Message from Interim Superintendent

Good evening, this is Interim Superintendent Harold Vollkommer and I'm calling to wish all of our amazing San Bernardino City Unified students a wonderful first day of school. We’re excited to welcome students back tomorrow, Monday, August 3 in distance learning mode.

Online learning is the safest way for all of us to return to school right now and we’re working hard as a district team to make it the best it can be for our students. So parents, you will notice several important changes from the way remote learning worked last Spring. Beginning tomorrow, your children should engage in daily live interaction with their teachers. We will take attendance and keep you well-informed about your child’s participation. Our teachers will be grading student work and you will have access to their grades online through the Aeries Parent Portal.

Admittedly, it’s not the in-person, on-campus experience that we all prefer, but tomorrow will begin a quality learning experience for your kids. Our teachers and school teams are looking forward to reconnecting with our students.

Viewed positively, this experience provides our students with a real lesson about adapting in a changing world. They are learning how to do things that generations of students before them did not. If we all approach this time with a positive mindset about what can be gained, we can eventually return to school campuses - when it is safe to do so - better for having had this learning experience together.

Again, welcome back! We’re all in this together. And I wish and everyone of you a great first day of school. Thank you.

July 31, 2020 - Message to Families

This is San Bernardino City Unified School District calling to remind all families and students that the first day of online, distance learning is Monday, August 3. Please note that due to COVID-19, all students are starting the new school year in distance learning mode, meaning students will be learning remotely from their home since all SBCUSD campuses remain closed. Students will not be admitted to school campuses at this time. We look forward to seeing students online on Monday, August 3. Thank you.

July 20, 2020 - Letter to Families

Dear San Bernardino City Unified Families%2c

On behalf of our Board of Education and our entire SBCUSD team, welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year! We hope you had a restful summer break and are ready for a year filled with learning. Who could have imagined at the beginning of 2020 what we would all experience. By working together, we have met the challenges we faced and have emerged with significant knowledge.

The start of a school year is always a time of hope and new beginnings. This is true of 2020-21 as well. By applying what we learned last spring, working hard to meet new levels of rigor from state guidelines and legal requirements and, most importantly, listening to you, we are confident that Distance Learning 2.0 has been greatly improved for students.

I want to restate that the decision to begin the school year in distance learning mode was made with the safety of students, staff and families as the primary concern. We know that there are those who want students and teachers to physically return to school. We share your sentiment. However, the rising number of COVID-19 cases in our community and directives from Governor Gavin Newsom make it necessary to begin in this way.

As we begin the school year, know that we are here to help in any way we can. Here are a few resources to keep handy:
  • If you need a device or internet or are having trouble with what you have, please call our CyberTech hotline at (866) 223-8685.
  • As you experience Distance Learning 2.0, please continue to share your thoughts and ideas through your child's teachers, principals, and our central office staff.
  • Use our website, www.sbcusd.com, to access information about the various programs, resources, and supports we offer to both students and families.

Thank you again for your patience and support as we begin a school year unlike any other in recent history. Your partnership is sincerely appreciated, and we look forward to a terrific 2020-21 school year!

With Respect and Admiration,

Harold J. Vollkommer, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent
