Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community Members:

This school year, the San Bernardino City Unified School District has embarked on a mission to take our Community Engagement Plan to a new level and use it as a catalyst for hope and increased student engagement.

View the 2016-17 Community Engagement Plan video.

Making Hope Happen is not just our new District motto, it is the mission of every adult who works in the District. We fully believe in these four key beliefs* about hope.

  1. Hope matters
  2. Hope is a choice
  3. Hope can be learned
  4. Hope can be shared with others

Gallup's 2014 State of America's Schools report shows that students who strongly agree with the following statements are 30 times more likely to be engaged at school:

  • My school is committed to building the strengths in each student.
  • I have at least one teacher who makes me excited about the future.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District will use the nine strategies of the Community Engagement Plan detailed in this publication to build the strengths in each student and inspire their excitement about the future. I am certain that by living our motto of Making Hope Happen, we will change our community and give children in San Bernardino and Highland a promising future.
