Parents Matter

Parents Matter

Adolescents want to hear and learn from their parents, especially when it comes to issues of sexual health. The HIV Prevention Education Office provided classes using the Parents Matter curriculum to get parents and adolescents talking. The purpose of the program is to delay sexual onset and to promote healthy sexual behaviors in youth by:

  • Making parents aware of risks youth face today, and how early in the life course they may encounter these risks.

  • Promoting specific positive parenting practices that have been associated with lowering risks.

  • Providing parents with knowledge, skills comfort and confidence regarding effective communication about sexuality education and sexual risk reduction with their children.

  • Empowering parents to take ownership and join the community efforts to promote prevention efforts in STD, HIV, and pregnancy prevention for their children.

The curriculum is delivered over five consecutive weekly two and one half hour sessions. Each session builds upon the foundation laid in the previous session.
