Libraries are the backbone of many communities. They are safe, cool places where you can read and borrow books for free, wait out a summer heat wave, gain free access to computers and the internet, explore your creativity, and much more. And, the local libraries in San Bernardino, Muscoy, and Highland are no different.

The San Bernardino Public Library, serving the City of San Bernardino, offers Family Story Time, where children can listen to librarians read new and favorite books. Family Story Time in English is held on Mondays at 5 p.m. at the Villaseñor Branch Library, Thursdays at 4 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m. at the Inghram branch, and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at the Feldheym Central Library. Family Story Time in Spanish is held on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. at the Feldheym Central Library. For more information, visit www.sbpl.org or call (909) 381-8235. The Villaseñor Library, 525 N. Mt. Vernon Ave. in San Bernardino, is open Monday through Thursday only.

If you are looking to build a home library, the Friends of the Library holds regular book sales of gently used books at significant discounts. For just $2, you can fill a grocery bag with as many books as you can fit. The next Bag Sale is Saturday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Feldheym Central Library, 555 West 6th Street in San Bernardino. For more information, call (909) 381-8251.

The Baker Family Learning Center, part of the San Bernardino County Library system, offers the Learnology Lab: A STEM Program for Kids. Children can participate in hands-on projects related to science, technology, engineering and math. The next sessions are September 12 and 19 at 3:30 p.m. The Baker Center, 2818 Macy Street in Muscoy, is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Call (909) 887-5167 for more information.

The Highland Sam J. Racadio Library & Environmental Learning Center, 7863 Central Ave. in Highland, opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturdays. In addition to also offering the Learnology Lab, the Highland Library offers the Animal Ambassadors program, where children and teens can learn fun and interesting facts about the library’s special creatures. Animal Ambassadors is scheduled for September 25 and October 2 at 4 p.m. Call (909) 425-4700 for more information.

Each library has different hours of operation, and patrons are encouraged to call for specific information. All local libraries are closed on Sundays.
